Bought most of them at half price in the classifieds here. After I bought my 16 inch dob I upgraded all of my eyepieces to ES or televue (82 Deg afov) and now use those on my 8 inch with a 2 inch diagonal which was a big improvement over the cheap possels if you want to get the most out of your 8 inch. ![]() Got a nice solar filter for it too which is good for sunspots. From my backyard limited sky availability I use manual mode and do 5 or 6 alignments on random areas of sky instead of 3 but I assume it’s still easier than 3 manual star alignments which I’ve never had to do. The starsense makes alignment easy using auto mode with plenty of sky available. I can easily lift the whole thing without disassembly or break it down n 3 pieces for travel. I like my Celestron evolution 8 with starsense. Otherwise, other really good SCT designs to consider: You could put it on a Celestron AVX mount for simplicity, tracking and GoTo. It's going to throw a consistent view up every time, and will be way less problematic with temperature changes compared to a larger mirror. So that said, I would probably lean towards the SW 120mm ED APO refractor for this purpose. But having this with tracking & GoTo will be very difficult and large and heavy.Ī high quality 5" or 6" APO will be outstanding for this, and minimal setup and cooling time. It's inexpensive and really does a great job for it's cost for this purpose.Ī high quality reflector will do a better job than the SCT. The NexStar 8SE is actually really excellent for someone who wants a very simple setup, light weight, easy to align, easy to control, GoTo tracking telescope with decent aperture to reveal planetary details.
